Vic: Garbos to be banned from back of garbage trucks
New safety rules could put an end to the traditional Australian garbo who hangs off a truck.
Garbos in Victoria are to be banned from riding on their vehicles -- and even fromlifting heavy recycling bins.
The guidelines drafted by WorkSafe Victoria are expected to come into force next year.
WorkSafe Victoria director of public sector and community services ROBYN GILLIS saysthe rate of injuries among garbos is too high.
Garbage collectors have been killed or seriously injured while riding on the back oftrucks, either by slipping off, being flung off or by being crushed by another vehiclehitting the truck.
In October 1998, a 19-year-old man was killed when he slipped off the back of a garbagetruck, which reversed over him.
