TAS: State funeral on Saturday for Aust's oldest WWI vet
HOBART, Aug 25 AAP - Australia's oldest WWI veteran Frank MacDonald will be farewelledat a state funeral in north-west Tasmania on Saturday.
A spokesman for Premier Jim Bacon said the funeral would be held in Ulverstone, withfurther details to be released tomorrow.
State RSL president Ian Kennett said he expected at least 500 people to attend.
"I hope we see a lot of the younger generation out there to pay their respects to anAustralian national hero," he said.
"He was one of nature's great gentlemen who was always quite amused by the attentionhe received."
Mr MacDonald, 107, died of pneumonia at the weekend after being admitted to hospitalearlier this month when he fell and fractured his hip.
The last surviving WWI veteran decorated for bravery, he was awarded the Military Medalfor "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action" in Belgium on October 12, 1917.
