The pictures are vivid and disturbing - looters with smiles on their faces running out of Los Angeles stores with everything from shoes to sofas, toothpaste to television sets piled in their arms.
The images have left many wondering what leads people of every age, race and gender to commit wanton acts of thievery and destruction and, in many cases, to destroy their own neighborhoods.
"Civilization is a thin veneer on all of us," said Chaytor Mason, a psychology professor at the University of Southern California. "It is easily rubbed off. That's what is happening out there."
