Qld: Sunday trading back on the agenda
The Queensland government will be forced to review shop trading laws next year, putting
Sunday trading for big retailers back on the agenda.
The Courier Mail newspaper reports the move came after the federal government's warning
yesterday to states and terrirtories to review trading hours or risk losing funding.
The BEATTIE government has yet to undertake its review of shop trading hours, delegating
responsibility to the Industrial Relations Commission.
The Property Council of Australia director ROSS ELLIOTT has called on the BEATTIE government
to confront the issues as industry bodies signal they will renew their fight for extended
hours.
However the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia says any extension
of trading hours will destroy many small businesses.
Sunday trading is currently allowed in Cairns, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and the
Brisbane central business district between 10am and 4pm (AEST).
