Qld: Meter maids Queensland icons?

Are Gold Coast meter maids culturally significant?

Adoring Queenslanders believe the bikini-clad good samaritans are .. and have nominated
them as a state icon.

National Trust Queensland is compiling a list of 12 icons .. after receiving hundreds
of nominations from the community.

Surfers Paradise Meter Maids manager ROBERTA AITCHISON says the recognition is well
overdue .. after more than 40 years' service.

About 30 meter maids work from 9am to 7pm every day on the Gold Coast tourist strip.

Other recent nominations include Bowen mangoes .. WALLY LEWIS' Suncorp Stadium statue
.. Fraser Island .. Moreton Bay bugs .. the Brekky Creek Hotel .. the Black Stump .. and
Elliot .. the remains of Australia's largest dinosaur found near Winton in north-west
Queensland.
